PEBC: What You Need to Know: MAO-A Inhibitors

Examples:

Irreversible: phenelzine, tranylcypromine

Reversible: moclobemide


Indication: Depression

(usually not first-line due to adverse effects and drug interactions)


Adverse Effects: (Many!)

-insomnia

-nausea

-orthostatic hypotension

-sexual dysfunction

-tremor

-restlessness

-headache

-dry mouth


Drug Interactions:

-any serotonin agent (SSRI, SNRI, TCA, dextromethorphan, alcohol, triptans)

--> leads to serotonin syndrome and hypertensive crisis (confusion, tachycardia, fever)


*diet restrictions involving tyramine (can lead to hypertensive crisis)
