PEBC: What You Need to Know: Resins
Examples: Cholestyramine, Colestipol, Colesevelam
Indications:
-dyslipidemias
-diarrhea
-pruritus due to biliary disorders
Dosing:
-divided doses: once to three times daily
-with food (reduces upset stomach)
-dry powders should be mixed with water
Adverse Effects:
-nausea, bloating, gas, flatulence
-constipation (take more fibre)
-may increase triglycerides
-may increase liver function tests
-rare: hyperchloremic acidosis
Drug Interactions:
-resins tend to bind to other medications: administer other medications 1 hour before or 4 to 6 hours after resin
