PEBC: What You Need to Know: Inhaled Corticosteroids

Many options: beclomethasone, budesonide, ciclesonide, fluticasone, mometasone


Indication:

-asthma, bronchitis, COPD

-reduces inflammation, stabilizes lung function as maintenance treatment


Dosing: once to twice daily


Adverse Effects:

-oral thrush: make sure to rinse mouth afterwards and do not swallow; also reduced by using a spacer

-hoarse voice (dysphonia)

-growth reduction in kids if used long term (?)

-systemic adverse effects are rare because action is localized
